David Chang’s Momofuku group is a giant of New York’s contemporary culinary scene and its East Village iteration, a shadowy study in slate and wood, is as fast-paced and funky as the rest. Chef Max Ng draws on his Singaporean heritage to create highly original small plates that are unfussy but big on flavour. Summer truffles and fried cauliflower arrive drenched in brown butter vinaigrette, while sweetbreads and oysters are unexpectedly scattered with Thai basil. Craft beers, sake and an interesting collection of artisan amaro liquors keep the atmosphere buzzing.
